Just this day, an unexpected incident happened to my 4 year old son. I brought my son to school this afternoon, when we arrived heavy rain began to pour so i stayed until it stopped, then i left and returned to the office. After a few minutes came to the office the assistant of my sons teacher, i was informed that i have to get back to school because my son accidentally put something in his nose and that he wouldn't stop crying and that he was asking for me. It got me deeply worried knowing that something happened to my son, immediately i rushed to school then.
When i got there my son saw me, he burst into tears and embraced me. The teacher said that they found the object so they assumed that it wasn't inside his nose. I brought him to the hospital (ER) just to make sure it's really out of his nose, and to my surprise when the duty doctor checked his nose, there was this foreign object inside his right nostril. The doctor even let me peek and see the object. It was a black pea sized bead usually used for bracelets stucked inside his right nostril. I knew things like this happen to little kids, but honestly i never imagine it could happen to my son.
in my sons hand, a pea sized bead extracted from his nostril. |
I was not freaked out, not even panicking that time, i knew doctors have handled several cases and already knew how to take care of it. The duty doctor then was not an EENT, he was a surgeon, but have attended to similar cases. But having no EENT instrument available at that time and my kid freaking out and moving aggresively made it hard for the doctor to extract the foreign object off his nose, he did several attempts but still won't do. The doctor assured us that he can extract it but he needs to sedate my son, or we can refer to an EENT instead.
That very moment, realizing that the doctor was not able to extract the object off my sons nose got me worried. Seeing my son freaking out and crying out loud really breaks my heart and really got me teary eyed. Though my sons not feeling any pain, but i know that he was scared about him being in the hospital. I was kinda disappointed and frustrated that they were not able to get it off his nose. Panic starts to set in, even thoughts of surgery filled my head that very moment.
After a few minutes came a hospital employee saying that there's this military officer from V. LUNA Hospital, he was an EENT and was actually upstairs. We brought my son to that said officer. He then checked up my son, and in just a minute or two, using his instruments, he just inserted a metal instrument inside my sons nostril and extracted the foreign object off his nose, that quick and that easy, seem to have not exerted any effort at all.
That was a relief, "para akong nabunutan ng tinik sa dibdib" that was the feeling i had. Worries and negative thoughts suddenly vacated my head. What's left in it was a feeling of slight anger and disappointment towards the teachers. I felt really bad cause i know they have been irresponsible, it was negligence on their part. It happened in school, inside their classroom and during class. What were they doing? I believe as teachers, they were not just supposed to teach the kids but to look after the kids as well. They were teaching nursery students, kids of age 3 1/2 to 4 1/2. The school environment should be accident proof and all, teachers should be vigilant and extra careful in everything especially with the kids.
My sister insisted that i should make an incident report about what happened so that the school administrator, and the teachers would be informed about their negligence and shortcomings but still i opted not to. Instead we just talked to the school administrator and informed her about what happened, she told us that she'll talk to the teachers and do something about it.

It was a nerve racking experience, but it was a learning experience as well for me and for my son. I believe he learned his lesson not to stick anything in his nose, even in his ears. I just hope things like these won't happen again, not even to other kids. But i guess kids just have these weird things in mind that sometimes can lead to unlikely incidents and accidents. They don't mean it to happen, yet it happens.
